As you get older you get farther and away from you’re brothers and sisters. However this does not have to be the case. There are a couple of lucky brothers here at THS who work together and will maybe even start a business together one day.
The Aponte brothers, Giovanni and Allan are learning to be auto technicians together. “I wanted to be an auto technician first and then Allan copied me,” said senior Giovanni. “I don’t copy people! ... I was simply inspired and motivated by my brother’s acts,” replied junior Allan. Most people do work just for the money but not these guys. “I want to be an auto technician because I find it one of my true passions. I live for this,” said Allan. “I want to be an auto technician because I enjoy working with my hands and having to use my brain,” said Giovanni.
These two brothers plan on working together as they pursue their careers in the future. “Most likely we’ll work together, but if not we’ll still help each other out,” said Giovanni. “I concur with my brother. We will most likely work together in the future, but if, we don’t we will always share knowledge with one another,” said Allen.
Working with a family member can be helpful but it can also be some trouble. It’s helpful because they know what one another is or isn’t capable of. It’s also trouble because if the business closes they will probably blame one another witch will lead to family problems.
One way that these two brothers are trying to master the field of auto mechanics is by going to ROP. “I think ROP has enhanced my limits because they’re teaching me skills for my future career. I got an early head start at life,” said Giovanni.
“I think that ROP would be a good opportunity for anyone who would want some knowledge before they get into college,” said Allen.
These two brothers truly have everything planned out for their future, and they will always have each other’s back no matter what.
Twilight was published last year and has become an increasingly popular book for teenagers. Twilight is a story that combines suspense, lust, and vampire romance. This book may be long, but don’t let that stop you from reading because each page is enticed by the touching and compelling romance between Bella and Edward.
This book talks a great deal about vampires and how they interact with mankind. In Twilight, a pair of star-crossed lovers takes their love life into a whole new level. After Twilight became such a huge success, an explosion of Young Adult vampire books also emerged.
“I like Twilight because it is different from other books I read. This one talks about vampires falling in love with human beings,” said sophomore Cynthia Ibarra.
Bella, a beautiful girl who just arrived in Forks town comes upon Edward Cullen’s, a really socially awkward person who never talks or anything, One day she sits next to him in a Biology class and finds herself drawn to his appearance. She begins to grow attached to him and as they develop feelings for each other, Bella learns Edward’s secret.
Edward and his family are vampires, but they do not hunt down humans as their source of food. Instead they lust after and consume animal blood. Bella adores Edward and despite his origins, she goes out of her way to stay with him. Most readers have argued that Bella and Edward are just attracted to each other, while others believe that it may be love at first sight.
“I think that Bella and Edward fell in love too quick, so it’s probably love at first sight,” said junior John Khu, while freshman Christine Sanchez has this to say, “I don’t think that their relationship is love at first sight, but Bella is being attracted to Edward.
Edward’s family welcomes Bella with open arms and makes her part of the family, but with the amount of time she spends with his family, danger strikes. While they are picnicking, a group of roving vampires approaches Bella with bad intentions. One vampire, in particular, has become fixated on her and has a ferocious thirst for her blood.
Bella is now in grave danger and it is Edward and his family’s duty to protect her along the way from those vampires.
“I like Edward because he knows he is responsible for Bella’s life. He’s a responsible guy,” said freshman Nicole Gonzales.
Stephanie Meyer, the author of Twilight has stated that the red apple on the cover represents Bella and Edward’s love, which is forbidden, similar to the fruit of the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.” Bella has two choices to make; she can either partake of the forbidden fruit, implying Edward Cullen and finds herself in serious danger or she can move further into the relationship.
Are Bella and Edward defying the laws of nature with their forbidden relationship?
“Their love is forbidden because they are different species,” said sophomore Cynthia Ibarra.
The romance between Bella and Edward in a third-person perspective may be forbidden, yet in the perspective of these characters it is not. There is a gloomy feel to their impossible love, but this won’t stop Bella and Edward from giving up hope that their relationship is ill fated.
Forget any romance you have read before, Twilight is a must. This book is so unique and enjoyable it is almost like Vampire romance is a new favorable genre to majority.
There are a lot of students at THS who have are capable of going to college, but just don’t know it. It just isn’t part of their identity. Many students at THS will be the first ones in their family to go to college. For that reason, going to college may not be part of their mindset.
67.2% of high school graduates from the class of 2007 are enrolled in college or universities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This shows that there is a slight majority of students who attend college after high school.
There are many reasons why students may not think they are fit for college, and one is their personal background. “ For certain students who come from a bad background, they might believe that they can’t make it,” said junior Juan Bardwell. “ Just because your family didn’t take the chance of going to college doesn’t mean you don’t go to college.”
“Many of our students’ parents haven’t had the opportunity to go to college and this builds a barrier,” said history teacher Ms. Navarro. “ As teachers, we have the power of building a college going culture in our classrooms as well as supporting students through all the doubts and fears.”
Harmandeep Singh, a senior at THS has a lot to say about this issue. “ I think it’s students who are too lazy or they do not believe going to college will help. They look at the past, not the future.” With many other things going on in senior year, people forget to fill out applications and other required things for college.
“Grades are a measure of a student’s abilities and students believe that they are not good enough for college,” Harmandeep added. “Especially since colleges look at grades and standardized testing scores.”
Numerous students’ parents affect their views on whether or not to go to college. “I think parents do influence the decisions of their children since their parents are their role model,” said Harmandeep. Some parents might not know as much as others and because of that their kids may suffer.
The rush of meeting the deadline for college applications may be stressful but that doesn’t mean that you cannot make it. With the help of THS staff, such as teachers, you can make it to college with less stress.
Smiles and giggles, whining and frowns, tons of activities for babies all around. The T-High Day Care Center: a place where your kid could be a kid. Tennyson is one of the few schools that have a free day care program. It has been around for more than 30 years, and teenage mothers seem to regard it with gratitude.
The infant center is a big help to teenage mothers here at Tennyson. The free day care program allows them to go to school, get their education and have their kid close by. This program also saves them a lot of money. Herniesha Buttler, a junior here at Tennyson, couldn’t agree more. She seems to be very grateful to be attending a school where she can have her baby watched for free and learn at the same time. “I think the day care program is a good idea because there are a lot of people who have kids and they don’t have anybody to watch them while they go to school,” said Herniesha.
The infant center presents itself as a very good program. Mothers seem to really like it as well as their kids. “When my baby is sick or something and can’t come, he starts crying, but when he’s here, he looks happy,” added Herniesha.
The day care center is divided into two sections, one for infants, and the other for toddlers. “There are many activities that take place here for these babies,” said Ms. Lewakowski, a teacher at the infant center. “For the infants we talk with them, introduce them to new toys, and play with them. With the toddlers, we do other types of activities like have them play with blocks, finger paint, and sing with them. We also do a little bit more active things with them like taking them outside for walks and letting them play on the playground,” she added.
Unfortunately, not many high schools have a free day care program and because of that, many teen moms struggle and cannot get their education because they cannot afford to pay anybody to watch their kid. Since Tennyson is one of the only schools to have a mommy program, Sophomore Gabriela Mendoza had to leave her last school, Hayward High, to come here. “If it wasn’t for the free day care program, I wouldn’t have came to this school because most of my friends are at my other school,” she said. Gabriela emphasizes on how this free day care program has not only helped her but her close ones as well. “This program has not helped me but my boyfriend since he’s the one that pays for everything. If he were to pay for day care then that would limit us on a lot of things, because day care is very expensive. Plus, if I was to go to another day care I wouldn’t be able to see her for eight hours, and that would just drive me crazy,” said Gabriela.
The Tennyson Day Care Center holds about 14 babies a year. Usually the day goes by smoothly here, but there are times when it does get a little stressful. “It gets stressful during the beginning of the school year because the babies don’t know us and new babies tend to cry a lot because they’re not used to us. It’s sort of the same thing after long breaks because the babies forget us,” said Ms. Lewakowski.
The purpose of the Day care center is for teen moms to be able to graduate and Tennyson seems to be very fortunate to have such a program that allows for that to happen.
